Flashback – Newsies #5

My fifth time seeing Newsies was June 6, 2012. My assistant basketball coach from high school had been visiting NYC, and he had taken his family and I to see Phantom of the Opera.

Of course, I was already solidly a fansie of Newsies the musical (the movie had long ago become one of my passions), and might be one of the only people to walk out of a Phantom show (in this case, a matinee), with “Santa Fe” stuck in their head. Actually, I’m probably one of the only people to walk out of a Phantom show with anything other than Phantom stuck in their head.

It conveniently was a few minutes before the Newsies Lottery opened, and I had just bid farewell to my coach and his family, so I strolled over to the lottery, and got the chance to see Newsies again.

I don’t know if there were any swings on for that performance because I don’t have my Playbill with me right now.

Flashback! – Newsies #3

I’m going to keep sharing my Newsies flashbacks with you guys this week. I’m so excited about Friday! My six month Newsies-Versary is coming up so quickly! I can hardly believe it!!!

My third time seeing the show was April 20, 2012. It was the night before I was headed to California for a visit, and I was pretty stressed about the trip. This was the same trip where I would be giving a speech in front of a bunch of important people at my alma mater, and  I would be one of the least experienced speakers at this event. Suffice to say, I struggled writing my speech. If any one remembers my post about that, I think I spent a good couple of days listening to Watch What Happens on repeat. So of course, it got quoted in my speech, and it turned out to be a bit of a hit (much to my surprise). You can read my speech here if you’re interested in the awesomeness that comes from quoting Kara Lindsay’s Newsies song (My topic was Inclusive Community. I could have gone another way with Newsies references, and maybe one day I will. I mean think about it…”For the sake of all the children…” Yeah, that could be really good.)

Anyway, for my third time seeing the show, Alyssa won the lottery! I don’t think there were any swings or understudies on that night (My apologies if there were. I don’t have any understudy slips tucked into my Playbill from that night, and I usually save those).

Flashback – Newsies #2

In honor of my 6-month Anniversary of seeing Newsies on Broadway, I’m sharing some old stage door pictures, because I keep flipping through them. And they make me happy. So here we have Newsies #2 – March 30, 2012 matinee. I SROed this show with Caitlyn, a former member of my community who happened to be visiting.

Wednesday Wishes July 11, 2012

It’s summer time, and styles in New York have been a-changin’. People are losing jackets and sleeves like it’s nobody’s business. I’ve heard it said that this summer will be the come-back for designer tank tops for men. Based on what I’ve seen, I have no doubt that this is true. It helps that the first six months of this year have been the warmest on record. No one wants to be wearing a jacket in these temperatures.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve really noticed the adorable fashion sense of some of my favorite Broadway actors. Many of these ladies were so bundled up earlier in the year, that I hardly noticed their outfits, but they did all have adorable jackets and scarves. Now that they’ve cast these hindrances off and are really showing off their wardrobes, I’m super inspired.

New York is know for being one of the most fashionable cities in the world, and seeing these wonderful actors looking all adorable in their summer-wear despite the fact that they spend a couple of hours a day draped in layers of clothing underneath the heat of stage lights is absolutely inspiring. Kara Lindsay, Maddy Trumble, and Laurie Veldheer are always dressed adorably.

Let’s take a quick look at Kara and Maddy (I don’t have any pictures of Laurie’s outfits):

They’ve all got this really awesome sense of style that is perfect for the humid summer days here in New York. So to appreciate that, my Wednesday Wishes this week center around tops that I want, that I think they might like too (or at the very least that I want because they remind me of their styles).

Lakeside Romance Curvy Plus Top In Fuchsia

Rendered in lightweight cotton, this fuchsia and ivory plaid top exudes vintage-inspired charm with delicate ruffle accents, a demure neckline, and front button closures. Semi-sheer.

Pair this with some cuffed shorts and espadrilles, and you can channel all three of these lovely ladies by switching up your accessories. I personally thing Maddy would look phenomenal in this color.

Tropical Daydream Curvy Plus Chiffon Blouse

A sun kissed yellow hue and a breezy silhouette give this sheer chiffon blouse a hint of tropical glamor. Finished with elasticized dolman sleeves, an elasticized smocked hem, and an alluring keyhole back. Wear with your favorite camisole and espadrilles for relaxed style.

This top also reminded me of Maddy’s red one above (yes they are very different, but…). It’s got a similar feel to it, but the different color makes it so much fun.

Striped Montage Curvy Plus Top

Simple, chic, and beautifully refined, this delicate chiffon blouse in white boasts variegated stripes in colorful hues and a classic neck tie. Semi-sheer. Pair with your favorite camisole and statement jewelry.

I saw one of these ladies rocking a top with a similar silhouette once, and fell in love. It’s such a classic look, and these stripes give it a nice pop of color.

Orchid Gardens Curvy Plus Blouse

A garden of red and honeyed yellow roses are in full bloom on this romantic ivory blouse crafted in delicate chiffon. The style is completed with glowing front button closures, fitted cuffs, and an elasticized smocked hem for a flattering silhouette. Sheer.

For some reason, this one screams Kara at me. I think she’d rock this with khaki shorts and some cute sandals.

Coral Delight Crocheted Collar Blouse

A cream lace collar lends vintage-inspired style to this romantic coral hued chiffon top. Crafted in a flattering trapeze silhouette, the style is finished with front button closures and a back button keyhole closure. Semi-sheer. Fully lined.

I love the simplicity of this top. The cut is something I think would look adorable on all three ladies!

Delightful Bow Tank In Green

Polished with a romantic bow tied just so, this silky green tank features cream accents and a breezy trapeze silhouette. Tuck into a skirt or pair with jeans and wedges for effortlessly chic style.

I couldn’t pass this top up when I saw it. It’s a color I’ve seen Kara wear a couple of times, and it looks amazing on her. I like the details, and I think she might too!

Central Park Polka Dot Top

Glowing with a subtle hint of sheen, this silky beige top is adorned with playful coral polka dots, ruched accents, and crisp pleats at the neckline for added fullness. Finished with back button closures.

This top would look amazing on Maddy and Kara for sure. I know that they’d each bring their own unique style to it.

I really love these tops. I was trying to cut down the numbers because I usually just post five wishes, but I was having so much fun checking out Ruche’s tops, that I kept discovering more. Believe it or not, I actually narrowed down my wishes a lot.

What are you wishing for this week?

Newsies and The TRL Generation: Broadway Sings the 90s

I wasn’t going to include Newsies in this post, but someone asked to see the pictures, so I’ll include those below. There will be Newsies pictures from last Friday when I went to the show with Megan, and from April 20th, because I just got those pictures from Alyssa, and want to share them with you. Basically the show was amazing as always.

Now, on to more important matters. On Sunday night, I went to Joe’s Pub to see “The TRL Generation: Broadway Sings the 90′s, a benefit for Broadway Impact” which was pretty awesome. There was a boy-band group, a Spice Girls remix, and lots of awesome single acts. I love 90s music. I love Broadway singers. It was perfect. It was everything I wanted it to be, and it was fabulous. I had a caesar salad, which was really good, but the performances were epic. Everyone did such an amazing job.

The highlight, though, was definitely Britney Poppins. Steffanie Leigh is fantastic, and she pulled off Britney beautifully. It definitely helped that she had Garett Hawe dancing back-up and he was rocking a bright blue TMNT t-shirt. They incorporated all sorts of Britney’s dance moves, and even brought out a snake! It was awesome. I can’t even begin to say.

Basically, I’ll be back at Joe’s Pub soon.

Five Fabulous Friday Favorites! (July 6, 2012)

Here’s a list of some favorite things from the past week!

Favorite Fourth of July Treats:

Favorite Fruit (double entendre for a few people):

There are only four people who will get the double meaning of this…

Favorite Moment:

I don’t really have any photos of this or anything, but on Monday (as many of you know) Brendon Stimson made his Jack Kelly debut, and I went to go see it for many reasons, including the fact that I met his mom in Times Square and she talked about how she hoped Brendon would get to go on one day. Well, he did, and he was phenomenal, as I’ve said before. But my favorite moment was when he came out of the stage door that night, and when he saw me he said “Hey Steph, how’s it going?” which pretty much sealed the deal on that performance being the most memorable one.

Favorite Smile:

Isaac’s Live Lip-Dub Proposal is adorable. It brings happy tears to my eyes.

Favorite YouTube Video:

This video is just plain amazing, but Ben Fankhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger might be my favorites in it. I think Ben is actually singing about Andrew

Hope you enjoyed! Share your Friday Favorites in the comments below!!! Thanks all!

Lucky Number 7: My seventh time seeing Newsies.

The last day of June, Chris and Sophia had tickets to go see Newsies. My favorite Broadway show. When I finally found out, the night before, I decided that come hell or high water I was going to get into that show.

First off, I’d given Laurie a couple of trading cards to get signed by some of the boys for me, and I wanted to get them back.

Secondly, Lewis Grosso was going on as Les. Lewis is my favorite little broadway actor. Seriously. He’s the best and most adorable little kid ever.

Third, I just love the show and I happened to have had $30 in cash handy.

So after a quick little jaunt through the American Museum of Natural History, I went down to my favorite place in all of New York: 208 West 41st Street. As soon as I got there, I went to the box office. I’m glad they don’t recognize me yet. I asked if there was going to be standing room only tickets available for purchase after the lottery (there were) and if Laurie had dropped off my trading cards (she’d given them to a security guy).

Then I went to talk to the guys running the lotto. I needed to see the show tonight, which I told them, and I asked where the standing room only line was (even though I already knew), and got into that line, and entered the lottery.

While I waited for the lotto to happen, I saw Ryan Breslin (Bres) walk by looking all cool with his iPad and his sunglasses, then Tommy Bracco walked by with Alex Wong, and then the lotto started.

I lost. Chris lost. Sophia lost. The guy I partnered up with lost. It was quite tragic, but I was first in line for standing room, so I wasn’t too upset. When they moved us to go get our tickets, my skin was jumping. I was so excited to be seeing Lewis perform again. I hadn’t seen him since March 31, and I missed his cute sad face and the way he sings “and we’ve got Jack.”

I bought my ticket and asked about the cards. They told me neither Laurie nor Nelson had come by yet, to which I replied that I knew who Nelson was and that I would just ask him when I saw him.

After grabbing food with Chris and Sophia, we headed back to the theatre. I saw Nelson, and asked him if Laurie had given him any trading cards. He said he hadn’t seen her yet, and that he’d go check backstage for her and bring the cards to me.

I jumped in line and waited patiently, scouting out Newsies walking by. Nelson came by and told me Laurie hadn’t shown up yet, but that she might be walking by, and a few minutes later she did!

She looked happy to see me, and said that she’d get the cards to Nelson and to enjoy the show. Then Garett Hawe walked by and said hi, and I just about died right there.

Then the line started moving, and when I got to the front, Nelson asked me where I was sitting so he could bring me the tickets and I told him I was doing standing room only, and he said he’d bring me the trading cards when Laurie gave them to him.

Before the show started, I bought a new Newsies tshirt, and got Jack Scott’s trading card! Hello completed collection! Now I just need to get Lewis and Jack to sign their trading cards. I also got to talk to other people who were SRO, and give them advice on when to duck to see what was blocked by the mezzanine, which sort of bothered the guy sitting in front of me, even though I didn’t say anything about the actual plot that isn’t in the playbill  (Dude, it lists all the songs in order in the playbill, and I only referenced songs).

Then the show started and was just a beautiful as always. Newsies is filled to the brim with some ridiculously talented actors and actresses. They are all stunning and amazing every second of the show. Just after Watch What Happens, Nelson brought me the trading cards! I was so close to completing my set…just two more signatures on cards to go!

At intermission, I met more people who let me gush about how amazing the show is and how much I love the movie. Then I opened my envelope from Laurie to check out my four trading cards, only to discover a fifth! A fansie had made Laurie her own trading cards and she gave one to me! SIGNED! I was so excited!

When the second act started, I had calmed down a little bit. I was enjoying the show, watching my favorite people nail it on stage, when Nelson came up to me. “Come with me” as I started to follow he pointed to my stuff, “bring that with you.” Then he proceeded to walk me down to the fifth row in the center orchestra. “You can sit here for the rest of the show.” I just about died. I was in shock and awe, I’m not sure how I was functioning.

So I sat and cried and watched the most magical parts of Newsies (Something to Believe In and Once and For All) up close and center. My eyes are red in all of my stage door pictures as a result of this…but that’s okay because it was TOTALLY WORTH IT!

NELSON IS THE MAN! I adore him. I think he is the best thing since sliced bread. He’s ridiculously awesome. I can’t even explain how amazing I felt because of his actions that night.

I still got to the front of the stage door line, which was awesome, and I got to take pictures with just about everyone who came out.

And guess who came out? That’s right. The elusive Kyle Coffman. So we made a video of him saying hi to his biggest fan:

All in all, it was an amazing night, and I can’t wait to see the show again July 8!!!!

Newsies at Barnes and Noble

Friday, June 22, 2012 was amazing. June 22 was the Barnes & Noble Live event at Barnes & Noble on Lexington and 86th Street featuring some of my favorite people in the world.

Yep. Newsies. Performing at Barnes & Noble. Signing the CD. Harvey Fierstein and Jack Feldman and Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay and Ben Fankhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger.

So of course I got there super early and milled around until the line got a little longer. I bought 3 CDs (buy 2 get one free? Yes please.) to get one signed for my mommy (she thinks its pretty cool, and I know its awesome), and one for me, and one extra (maybe for a sister?).

When I wasn’t going to be the first person in line, I wandered over and got in line and hung out with other fansies and waited for the boys to show up.

Time passed, blah, blah, blah…and then the boys started to arrive. The Newsies are all absolutely amazing. I love every last one of them. They are so sweet and so kind and so adorable.

Anyway, they finally let us in to get seats and we got all settled. The staff told us we were getting three things. Three!

  1. a performance by the cast of the Tony Award Winning Music
  2. a picture with the cast
  3. a chance to get our CDs signed.

Yeah. That’s right. A picture with the Newsies. Anyone remember my wish list from last Wednesday? (See here) Wish granted! Thanks Disney and Barnes & Noble!

The boys started performing, and Kara sang Watch What Happens and Jeremy joined her for Something to Believe In and I about died. It was amazing, flawless, beautiful.

Then we took pictures with the cast as we slipped into line to get our CDs signed. They were all amazing and it was nice to talk to them and say thank you for being amazing!

Peter and the Starcatcher: Barnes & Noble Live Event

Barnes and Noble does all sorts of really interesting events, and the ones in New York are by far the best! That’s why last Thursday, I had an AMAZING opportunity.

Peter and the Starcatcher (5-Time Tony Award Winner) had recently released its annotated script (which is simply stunning, by the way. I think there should be one for Newsies), and B&N was hosting an event for it. They invited Ridley Pearson (author of Peter and the Starcatchers with Dave Barry, and The Kingdom Keepers) to host the event, and they brought in Director Rick Elice, and the three of the lead stars from the show: Christian Borle, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Adam Chanler-Berat.

The format was pretty simple. Before the even started, twitter followers for @StarcatcherBway were invited to tweet in their questions. Ridley Pearson used those as a jumping block for questions to ask the cast, and he really only needed to ask three or so questions, because they were really good at telling the story of how the script came from a book, through La Jolla, to NY Theatre Workshop, to Broadway.

It was amazing seeing how connected they all are, and how they constantly give credit to each other for the show getting to where it is today. You can really see the camaraderie that defines their show come out in their interactions off stage.

After the question session, they all set up at a table and prepared to sign several copies of the script. They were all wonderful and were excited to hear what their fans had to say. They responded accordingly, and just had huge smiles on their faces the entire time. They are such a funny, warm, and welcoming group of people! It was amazing!

I was really excited to meet Ridley Pearson because he wrote the Kingdom Keepers, which is this awesome book series that my youngest sister and I just absolutely adore! It’s like mystery and adventure and excitement meet Disney.

Christian Borle is phenomenal, I’m surprised I was able to say thank you without stumbling over my words. I was so overwhelmed about being in the presence of such an amazing and impressive actor. I watch him on SMASH too, and I literally am stunned at how fabulous he is.

Celia Keenan-Bolger, big sister to Andrew Keenan-Bolger, is absolutely stunning. Girl has style, class, and an amazing voice. She can act the pants off of anyone. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: She could wear a paper bag and still look gorgeous. I definitely stumbled through my words to her, but man, she is so down to earth, and so kind to everyone.

Adam Chanler-Berat was adorable. Literally, I cannot explain him any other way. He’s funny, charming, and sweet. I was so impressed by how humble he is too! Everyone was trying to say that bringing him into the PATSC world brought the magic that was missing, and he was all bashful and shy about it, trying to credit them with the magic too. He is a winner in my eyes!

Meeting Rick Elice was almost too much for me to handle. By the time I got to him, I was already overwhelmed by all of the greatness and gratitude, and I feel like I made a fool of myself in front of him, stammering over words and sentences like none other.

Anyway, I also have some pictures from the event to share with you guys. Click on the images to make them larger!
